ABSTRACT
One of the important factors affecting listening comprehension is using listening strategies. A recently developed valid instrument to measure learners’ use of listening strategy is Nix’s (2016) English as a foreign language (EFL) Listening Strategy Inventory (ELLSI). With the purpose of improving listening strategy research in the Iranian context and also enabling researchers undertake cross-cultural studies, the 23-item ELLSI went through a rigid process of translation into Persian. Then, using a convenience sample of 233 participants, a Rasch model analysis was conducted on the translated version to examine dimensionality, the statistics of individual items and the whole scale, category functions, person and item reliability, and invariance. The 23-item Persian questionnaire showed signs of multidimensionality. Three items which loaded on a secondary dimension were deleted, and the analyses were run again. The results revealed that the 20-item Persian version of ELLSI (PELSI-20) fit the Rasch rating scale model and is, therefore, a valid measure of listening strategies which can be used in research dealing with listening strategies in Iran and also for the purpose of cross-cultural studies.
